About Me

SUBJECTS

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

There is a prevailing idea among high school students that math is simply too difficult (or irrelevant); an idea that can demoralize them. This can cause students to neglect their studies in mathematics. As mathematical concepts build on one another, this can be particularly damaging to all their future studies in mathematics, causing a self-perpetuating cycle of exasperation and frustration with the subject matter leading to further neglect.

I have helped such students by emphasizing the role of intuition. By discouraging the simple memorization of rules that may seem arbitrary and also teaching students to develop and rely on mathematical intuition, the subject matter can become more manageable and even enjoyable.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I have a Bachelor of Science (cum laude) in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Since then, I’ve completed a Master in Management at the University of British Columbia. I’ve also passed Level 1 and Level 2 of the CFA Institute exams. I am currently in the process of completing my Master’s of Science Degree in Computational Finance and Risk Management at the University of Washington.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have experience tutoring students in mathematics and physics. This includes helping students at the university level while I was a graduate student.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

I like to ski in the winter. In the summer I cycle. I also enjoy playing the saxophone (especially when I’m with my family when we all play together; one of my brothers plays the clarinet and the other the cello). Lastly, I like to experiment in the intersection of programming and investing.
