As your child transitions into middle school, he or she will be experience new, exciting, and possibly even challenging changes. While your child handles a new school, meeting new people, new classes and expectations, you will likely also be experiencing some changes with your children. Middle school coincides with the onset of puberty, so it may be a trying time for you and your children. Here are some strategies to effectively and happily navigate this transition in both your lives.

  • Keep communication lines open. One of the most important things you can do during this time in your child’s life is to stay open and communication with him or her. You may find this may become more difficult, or the way you and your child communicate may change, but keeping open and constant communication will help solve any issues that may arise. Also, your child will feel better knowing they can talk to you whenever they want, about whatever they want.
  • Keep a schedule. Most children thrive with a consistent schedule. Having certain time each day designated for certain activities, such as homework, study time, time for chores, time for extra curricular activities, and more, will help avoid conflicts and you and your child will know what to expect each day.
  • Stay healthy. During this time your child is growing and their body is going through many changes. One of the most important things you can do to help your child at this point is to make sure they stay healthy. Ensuring a healthy diet, plenty of sleep and regular physical activity will help your child feel their best. The better your child feels, the better they will be able to perform in school.
  • Give your child space. During this time in your child’s life, your instinct may be to do everything you can to make the transition easier for him or her. While there are plenty of things you can do to help, you can also help by giving your child space. They are growing up and experiencing new things every day, but they also have a desire to experience these things on their own.
