Huron East District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum used in Huron East’s schools aligns the instructional process so that teaching objectives, grade-level expectations, and assessments of subject-area proficiency are based on the same clear standards. The curriculum is broken into subject-specific frameworks which guide student learning from K-12 within each subject. The English curriculum was designed to teach broad literacy and communication skills. Students begin with fundamentals in phonics, language development strategies, and basic reading and writing skills. As they progress, students are called on to do more analytic responses to texts, write for a range of purposes, be able to speak publicly and listen to others while using critical thinking skills. Literature is used so that student’s may increase their cultural and aesthetic awareness and to develop literacy skills in other subjects.

We currently cover the following Huron East-area school districts: Avon Maitland District School Board and Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Huron East District Curriculum

The framework for Math works in a similar manner whereby students learn foundational mathematic skills early, and move towards more complex topics in their secondary school courses. In grade 9, students are expected to become proficient in concepts of algebra, geometry, and data analysis and following that are able to take full-semester or full-year courses in these topics. Trigonometry and Calculus are available to juniors and seniors and many of the technology courses require students to be able to work with algorithms and modeling concepts learned in their Math courses.

The core academic experience enables students to pursue a range of learning experiences, and the curriculum provides for the types of programs and courses that students are interested in and can be used to determine future academic and professional pursuits. There are courses for juniors and seniors in Media and Communication within the English curriculum which integrate subjects like social studies and technology.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for the ACT/SAT

Students can become overwhelmed when faced with the SAT or ACT. With a few ideas, they can breathe a little easier on test day. First, one of the best ways to prepare is to take the practice test that can be found at bookstores. Most of these have several practice tests. The student should not worry if they do not excel as the main thing is they should learn from their mistakes. Another way to prepare is to read. Any book or article that they enjoy is going to help their reading comprehension and vocabulary. Writing will also help prepare. This can involve a research project or journal writing as they each will help the student become more comfortable with this skill. Finally, get a good night’s rest the night before, eat a good breakfast, and have all the supplies set out the night before so there will be no rushing that morning. Take a deep breath and relax.
