Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aberdeen District Curriculum

In Mathematics, special emphasis is laid upon teaching the kids numbers, their proper place values and simple operations like addition and subtraction with two digit numbers. As the child advances in grades, he/she is introduced to problems and concepts that are appropriate for his/her age. Special equipment including blocks, flat and 3-D shapes, and coins are used to teach basic principles of Math.

In English, special focus is laid upon the reading skills of our children. Besides this, regular exercises are provided to build up vocabulary levels and grammar skills of students. Use of flash cards, language software and other modern teaching elements is done widely to teach the kids in different types of situations and to teach them how to use what they are learning. For older students, language skills and the development of voice, as well as persuasive, analytic and creative writing skills are developed by providing them with regular topics and texts to write about.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor for Your Child

Looking for a tutor can be a hard task at times. The best thing is to look at is the tutor’s experience in providing education, since how many years has s/he been working, what grades is s/he teaching to and what their instructional approach and educational philosophy are. Inquire about the tutor from parents and friends and ask about their opinion and if they have had any experience with qualified tutors. Meet prospective tutors personally and talk to them and let them know exactly your child’s strengths and weaknesses so s/he may work upon the points that need more attention. The tutor must be friendly and amiable so your child feels at ease with him/her. Depending on the age and needs of your child, determine whether a one-on-one or an online tutoring situation would be better - or both! If you are to select any tutoring company, select the one that offers individual based learning method as one-to-one learning approach is the most reliable.
