Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Albuquerque District Curriculum

The public schools in Albuquerque are in the process of implementing the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core Standards were created to ensure the quality of public school curriculum across the United States. The standards apply to English Language and Mathematics Curriculum across all grade levels. The goal for the curriculum is to provide students with real world skills that can be used in college and in the workforce. In English & Language Arts students learn to read, write, listen and speak and learn to demonstrate both oral and written communication effectively.

In Mathematics, students work to develop both critical thinking and problem solving skills through an intensive program focusing on computation, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics. The math program is progressive with each grade level building on the skills learned in the previous grade. By the completion of senior high, students should be fluent in basic math and be able to apply what they have learned in the workforce or in higher math in college.
