Alden District and Curriculum

Alden Central School District is committed to providing all students a comprehensive core academic program, with supplemental courses and services to prepare students for post-secondary work or education. In accordance with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the ACSD offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum. Instruction is timely and focused on literacy in all subjects, which provide students the foundation to advance to subsequent grade levels. Part of the reason the district has enjoyed educational success is the involvement and dedication of highly trained teachers and staff in the development and implementation of innovative learning programs.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alden District Curriculum

The primary and middle school curricula provide students with foundational training in general academic subjects. Students will learn content in English language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, art, music, and physical education. Beginning in sixth grade, students may take courses in foreign languages, family and consumer science, and health. Students have access to a variety of academic, social, and emotional support services to aid in their development and determine their academic goals.

The secondary curriculum focuses on college and/or career preparation. Students create individualized plans to meet their current needs and future goals. Alden High School offers its students courses in the following departments: English language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, foreign languages, art, business, technology, music, and physical education/health. For instruction that is more specialized, students may attend training through the Harkness Career Education or College Enrichment Programs.

Keeping Informed: Recent Alden Educational News

  • Dollars for Scholars Aids Alden Students - The Alden Community Scholarship Foundation, in affiliation with Scholarship America, has founded Dollars for Scholars to provide collegiate funding for area youth. Comprised of community volunteers and alumni, the Alden Central High School class of 1962 created this program in 1998 to ensure Alden graduates pursue their goals.
  • National Honor Society Encourages Service and Academic Excellence - The Alden High School chapter of the National Honor Society provides many leadership opportunities to students. Upper classmen who demonstrate positive character, academic achievement, and a service record are invited to join this organization of outstanding students.
  • Students at Alden High a Part of Anti-Drug Campaign - Kids Escaping Drugs is a community effort to raise awareness and funds to fight drug addiction among adolescents and their families. The Western New York campaign helps provide community education, funds for programs, and maintenance of facilities.

Chalk Talk: Expectations of an Arts Curriculum

The visual and performing arts curriculum introduces students to theatre, music, visual arts, and dance. The dance curriculum provides students with skills-based benchmarks that help them build the skills to become proficient in many styles of dance. Learners explore fundamental components of dance, including its various genres. Ballet, hip-hop, ballroom, and jazz are among the types of dance explored. The physical demands placed upon dancers are explored as well. Students learn various warm up and cool down routines that help prevent injury. Students also identify the ways in which they can take care of their body so they can dance effectively and safely. The cultural influences of dance are explored as well, with students identifying the unique features of dances from societies around the world.
