Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alliance District Curriculum

English subjects focus on reading, speaking by doing presentations in higher grades and writing essays as well as understanding how to analyze the content of literature and apply it to practical contexts. By the time students reach Grade Three, they are expected to read with listening comprehension and write proficiently in a clear, articulate manner. Students are expected to understand how to manually solve problems and be able to take abstract math concepts and apply them for estimating in measurement, drawing shapes in geometry, and statistics to forecast probability drawing on future inferences.

The Alliance high school curriculum has added an Oil and Gas Technology Program which allows students to explore the production of the gas and oil field which are high in demand as well as workplace safety, communication and team work. The objective of these new curricula is to align with the new demands of the workplace in the 21st century and to accommodate employment opportunities in demand.

Chalk Talk: Field Trips to the Museum

Most teachers come to the point where they need to decide where to take students on a field trip and how this field trip will align with important learning objectives during the term. A great field trip can be at a workplace, a camp, a park or a historical museum from the early centuries. Students love to see how the past has shaped the present and how things have changed. The trip to the museum is not just for the historian; it is for everyone. Students can expect to see many museums in Ohio with old artifacts, and machinery from long ago. Seeing how history has shaped our present can help students to appreciate new inventions and how far we have come individually and collectively. Museums offer many activities such as pottery making and bread making the way it was done in the olden days! It is no surprise to see people dressed in old costumes that were worn long ago that take us back to a different time and way of thinking and relating to people.
