Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Amarillo District Curriculum

The Reading curriculum in Amarillo begins by teaching students how to read stories. This is done using a variety of sources, from books to eBooks and more. Beginning in early elementary, students see how reading can assist them in other subject areas as well. In fifth grade, students build on these reading skills even more as they begin to identify authors, characters, setting and theme in a non-fiction book. About this time students also learn how to visualize the text they are reading into pictures in their minds.

Mathematics also plays a part in various subjects of study. Amarillo Schools start by showing students that objects can use numbers to represent them when they are counting. They also learn about place values of numbers so they can read, write, compare and order numbers. When they have mastered these number skills they are ready to learn how to place numbers in equations to solve problems in science, social studies or even reading.
