Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Anoka District Curriculum

High school math students in Anoka learn about data analysis and probability as part of their studies. Probability simulations help students develop an understanding of the principles of probability and chance. Students then use that understanding to solve mathematical problems involving intersections, unions, and complements of events. The relationship between conditional probabilities and relative frequencies is explored as well. Learners work with normal distributions to develop a sense of how data looks graphically. Students also acquire the knowledge necessary to calculate mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.

In Language Arts, students offer their critiques of assigned readings, and work together to determine a text’s best and worst features. Learners additionally explore author bias by examining texts by several authors that address the same subject matter. Students also learn how to engage listeners by changing the pace, volume, and tone of their speaking voice. An introduction to using visual aids is introduced, with students becoming skilled at reviewing information, answering questions, and eliciting responses from a listening audience.

Chalk Talk: Why Your Child Should Read Everyday

Reading is an important skill to master in order to be able to reach one’s full potential. Naturally, reading is a skill that is required for success in school, work, and life in general. However, there are many other reasons why reading should be an integral component of your child’s daily schedule. Reading helps exercise our brains in a way that cannot be done when watching TV or playing video games. Additionally, reading promotes the development of the capacity to concentrate for extended periods of time. The improved understanding of the processes of reading and writing, as well as an enhanced vocabulary, are important results of reading as well. Students who are able to find the joy in reading will find that it is a lifelong pursuit that allows them to be learning throughout their life.
