Chalk Talk: How Flipped Classrooms Work

A flipped classroom is one in which students are responsible for beginning their learning of a topic on their own. Teachers might assign a reading or have students listen to a podcast about an upcoming topic before learning on that topic takes place in the classroom. Putting the onus of responsibility for familiarizing themselves with the material before class means students are much more active in the learning process. Students are able to conduct investigations into aspects of a topic in which they are most interested. Because student interest is increased, retention of the information is improved as well. And because flipped classrooms usually involve a lot of technology, students gain valuable experience in using technology to pursue educational goals. As a result of all of this, teachers can spend their time with students in class on diving deeper into the material, rather than spending time introducing the topic.
