Chalk Talk: Benefits of Experiential Learning

Many schools across the nation have instituted experiential learning techniques in order to enhance the educational experience of students. This form of hands-on learning affords many benefits to students. First, being actively engaged in the material makes learning much more concrete for students. Rather than dealing with abstract concepts, students are able to manipulate objects or examine documents for themselves. Second, experiential learning allows students to apply the knowledge they’ve acquired to practical experiences. For example, students in science class can use their classroom learning to conduct lab experiments that bring their learning to life. Lastly, experiential learning combines various learning styles into one experience, allowing visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners to equally engage in activities that promote further understanding. From lab experiments to document analyses to field trips, experiential learning is a great method for keeping young learners interested in education.
