Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aspen District Curriculum

The mathematics curriculum in the Aspen School District helps students develop skills they need to move beyond getting the correct answer to an understanding of the processes involved in doing the work of math. By focusing on these broad-based skills, such as problem solving and critical thinking, students acquire the ability to perform mathematical functions as well as apply mathematical processes.

The social studies curriculum focuses on helping students develop into responsible, informed citizens who respect diversity and have empathy for people dissimilar from themselves. Going well beyond the basics of history, government, and economics, students learn about the human condition, religious and philosophical ideologies, social justice, and the importance of civic engagement. The study of history, in particular, provides identity for students as members of a national community, as well as context for who we are based upon our past experiences.

Chalk Talk: Why Extracurricular Activities Are a Good Thing

Athletics and other extracurricular activities provide students with many benefits both on and off the field. Students who participate in sports develop effective communication skills, learn to work as a member of a team, and learn individual responsibility. When things go wrong or mistakes are made, students gain the ability to be resilient and deal with adversity in a healthy manner. Improved self-esteem is another fundamental benefit students derive from participation in activities. The feeling of accomplishing a goal gives students confidence that they can achieve other goals as well. Students also gain valuable time management skills as they juggle the responsibilities of schoolwork, sports practices, club meetings, and family obligations. All these skills serve to improve students’ success in the classroom as well.
