Chalk Talk: Getting the Most Out of the FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a critical component of the paperwork required for your child to get financial aid in college. To get the most out of this all-important document, follow these easy steps. First, file the FAFSA as early as possible. January is the best time to fill out and submit the document, that way it’s ready for schools that have early financial aid deadlines. Second, be sure to fill out the document in its entirety. This seems like an easy enough step, yet many students experience delays because they miss something when filling out the application. Lastly, consider moving any assets your child has into a 529 Savings Account. Funds in these accounts do not count toward the calculation of assets on the FAFSA, thus increasing the amount of aid for which your child may qualify.
