Aurora District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum provides the framework for planning instruction which is designed to foster conceptual understanding as well as literacy, communication, and problem-solving skills that students need for advanced educational and career pursuits. It covers all core subjects as well as the framework for special education services for students who require assistance in meeting the standards. The Ministry of Education further developed the curriculum to provide for the transitional period between high school and post-secondary life to ensure they are courses and programs aligned to students goals.

We currently cover the following Aurora-area school districts: York Catholic District School Board, York Region District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aurora District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, students study literature as a way to know themselves and the world. They also learn about different genre of literature, they learn how to interpret and analyze meaning in texts, and how to make connections between texts and their lives. The non-fiction portion of the curriculum also emphasizes strategies to become a critical reader of non-fiction such as recognizing point of view or bias and understanding the difference between primary and secondary sources.

In Science, the elementary years cover topics in structures and mechanisms, matter and energy, life and earth science. Students develop basic understanding of these content areas while also learning the processes of scientific inquiry. In high school, the basics of life and earth sciences prepare students for biology and physical science, while the instruction into principles of matter, energy, structures, and engineering principles introduces students to chemistry, physics, and topics in engineering. Math is devised around learning about numbers, operations, measurement, patterns, spatial relationships and students begin to put together the strategies for learning algebra, geometry, statistics, and pre-calculus.

Chalk Talk: Why Reading Everyday Is Important

The value of having good reading skills cannot be understated. Children today do not engage in as much reading as they should in order to foster the development of effective reading skills. But those that do read often reap many benefits. As a natural consequence of frequent reading, children acquire more developed linguistic skills. Students can identify main ideas and key details with greater ease, and can read faster as well. Improved vocabulary and better speaking skills are also benefits of reading often. Reading also improves valuable learning skills, such as attention and concentration, which are applicable in each and every subject in school. Children that read often are better equipped to understand events from multiple perspectives because reading stories about others fosters the development of empathy. Reading is a great stress relieving activity as well. Studies show that reading calms the mind and relaxes the body, and even makes sleep come faster and last longer.
