Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Avon District Curriculum

In language arts, students receive instruction in both fiction and non-fiction and develop different strategies to read, comprehend, and analyze different types of texts. By middle school, students will typically have to read at least one chapter a week which may also consist of defining vocabulary words and answering comprehension questions. At least once a week, each group will meet with the teacher to go over what has been read, student reactions to the text, and any problems students may have had with the text. The writing curriculum follows a similar framework whereby students are introduced to various styles of writing and have many opportunities to write for different purposes.

Students can also choose from elective courses in the area of agriculture. Topics in these classes include the advanced life sciences of animals, foods, and plants and landscape management. Students also learn about the current technology used to assist operations in these areas.

Chalk Talk: How To Make Homework Easier

Homework is given to help students review and understand what they’ve learned in class but many students admit that they don’t enjoy completing it. Here are some tips to make the process flow. First, be sure that you understand exactly what the assignment is. Ask your teachers any questions that you may have about what’s expected and make sure that you write it down. Remember that homework doesn’t have to be completed at home, either. If you have extra time at school, try to finish it there. That way, you’ll have immediate access to tools or teachers that you might need and less work to complete at home. Pacing yourself when it comes to big assignments is a great idea as well. Start with the hardest assignments first and work your way to the easier ones. Make sure to take breaks if needed. When you’ve finished your homework, go over it so you can spot any mistakes you’ve made and be able to correct them. You may even want to have someone else look over it as well, such as a parent. Make sure that you put the assignment back in your school folder and/or backpack.
