Avondale District and Curriculum

The core curriculum follows Common Core Standards in Math and English Language Arts and uses a comprehensive series of subject-specific frameworks in all other subjects. Each framework establishes the learning objectives which students must achieve in each subject. The Arizona Department of Education’s Career and College Readiness curriculum is designed to prepare students as effectively as possible for college and career choices when they leave high school and search for a college and a career.

We currently cover the following Avondale-area school districts: Agua Fria Union High School District, Avondale Elementary District, Litchfield Elementary District, Littleton Elementary District, and Pendergast Elementary District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Avondale District Curriculum

For English/Language Arts students in the early grades, the standards require that students learn listening and reading skills as well as writing and comprehension. Students not only read literature, they also read informational texts. Standards are more intense for grades 6-12 because the majority of literature classes must deal with poetry and literary pieces. The informational reading skills must be learned in other core classes like history and science. In grades 9-12, writing becomes more varied with the need for students to write well-supported arguments and essays that are explanatory and informative.

The College And Career Readiness standards in Arizona include the teaching of key concepts and students’ abilities to conceptualize. The skills of value placement and other critical components of math, building each new skill on skills already learned. Students learn a range of problem-solving methods in algebra and geometry and can also pursue more advanced math like trigonometry or statistics.

Chalk Talk: Maximizing the Tutor Experience

Tutors have an important job when it comes to relating with the multitude of student learning styles and backgrounds they face each day. It is critical that a tutor understands how a student learns best and can harness the natural abilities to help improve in areas of weakness. However, a child is a whole person and taking a holistic approach to relating to young people can make a big difference. In order to really connect with students, it is important to connect them culturally. Find out about their culture and languages. Show an interest in their family life and their communities. When you show an interest you will appreciate your students better and their self image will be built up. This will also play a role in improving their academic success.
