Aylmer District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in the area use the curriculum developed by the Ministry of Education which is a grade-level and subject-specific description of the learning goals central to the subjects taught. The Ontario Curriculum covers both traditional subjects as well as the Innovative Programs developed by the Ministry to increase the graduate rates across the province and to ensure they were serving their goal of providing students with engaging program options. Through this effort, the learning expectations for the Youth Apprenticeship Program, the High Skills Specialist Programs, and Cooperative Education were established. They are also supported by transition teams and other student support services.

We currently cover the following Aylmer-area school districts: London District Catholic School Board and Thames Valley District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aylmer District Curriculum

Students learn the fundamentals in English Language Arts like the proper usage of the language, ways to understand the meaning in texts, ways to appreciate the literary arts and the cultures learned about through reading, and the means to express a range of ideas. Writing is also a significant part of the learning expectations and students are expected to write both creatively and analytically, and use techniques to help them develop and revise their work. Presentation skills are encompassed within the curriculum as well, and students learn how to work with different presentation technologies and effective public speaking skills.

In Math, the goal is to provide students with fundamental knowledge in measurement and geometry, numerical operations, data analysis using probability and ratios and leads students towards focused classes in the algebraic and geometric fundamentals of math, statistics, trigonometry and calculus. In these, students study the relationships of equations, functions and principles of design, and methods to prove and communicate mathematics knowledge.

Chalk Talk: The Homework Debate

In light of recent research that sheds a negative light on homework, some school districts have elected to move to a no homework policy. This research, which essentially states that homework is overvalued and diminishes students’ personal well-being, points specifically to students from poor families, who may not have the time, energy, or support to complete homework in the first place. These students are unintentionally penalized when homework is assigned because they just don’t have the resources to complete the work. Other research calls into question the efficacy of homework. Alfie Kohn, a famous education expert, is particularly critical of homework, saying that it mostly offers no real value for students. Some school districts are listening to these critiques, and significantly rolling back the frequency of homework assigned. And when homework is assigned, it is of high value and something that is appropriate for the home environment, such as reading with the family or conducting science experiments. These active kinds of homework get kids involved in their learning, and involve their parents as well.
