Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Barnegat Township District Curriculum

The Barnegat Township School District develops its curricula according to the recommendations set forth in the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These documents outline benchmarks for student learning from kindergarten through the 12th grade in nine core subject areas: math, language arts, languages, 21st Century life and careers, social studies, the arts, health and physical education, social studies and technology.

The language arts standards foster development of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills requisite for success in post-secondary education, the armed forces or the workforce. A strong foundation of literacy learning begins in elementary school, where students learn the basics of spelling, punctuation and grammar. The middle school curriculum builds on this foundation, where students learn active listening skills, acquire public speaking skills and hone their reading and writing abilities. In high school, students learn how to examine texts for meaning, and analyze character development in fiction works.

Chalk Talk: Picking the Right School For You

When it comes to picking the right college for you, there are a lot of factors to consider. Cost is certainly a prime factor in determining where you will go to school. Distance from home is also often a consideration college-bound students make. When it comes to making the right choice for you, be sure to also consider your long-term goals. Think of where you want to be in four years. If you’ll be applying for medical schools after college, the academic reputation of your first school will be an important factor to consider. If you want to be immediately employable upon graduation, be sure to take a good look at the programs and majors your first school offers. A good idea is to look at schools based on the department you’d be studying in. For example, if you want to study psychology, a college may have a great overall reputation, but have a really weak psychology department. Taking into account all these factors will help you make the right decision for your college education.
