Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Barrington District Curriculum

The mission of the well-rounded curricula is to develop a student who is prepared not only to complete and succeed in academic challenges, but also to contribute to society and develop a life-long appreciation of education and its benefits. Art is used in the district to channel creativity and self-expression. Barrington Schools offer courses in ceramics, drawing, and painting as well as visual arts, design, and art criticism. Students are taught to use techniques of art and comprehend how art connects with history, society, and culture.

Other curriculum areas such as health and physical education or art have their own standards developed by teachers of the school. Health and physical education is considered an essential of academic success. Younger students begin to study the connection of health, body, and mind through activities that give opportunity to access competency in gross motor skills and to understand physical fitness.

Chalk Talk: Shopping for a New School Year

At the start of a new school year, families often make a shopping trip to obtain supplies and new clothing. Before shopping, it is important to plan what should be bought to be sure to get everything necessary for a successful school experience. Prior to the first day of school, some school release a list of suggested classroom supplies on the school website or in a letter. This should form the basis of each student’s personal shopping list. Likely, children may have grown out of shoes and clothing that was worn last year. Taking the time to go through the child’s wardrobe and have them try on jeans, shoes, and other articles of clothing can help the parent to get an idea of which items need to be replaced with a larger size. A student who is well-prepared with neat, presentable clothing will make a nice first impression and feel more confident.
