Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bastrop District Curriculum

The Morehouse Parish School District has implemented the state mandated Common Core Curriculum as the standard for coursework in Mathematics and English and Language Arts. Common Core is an evidence based curriculum that is geared toward helping students be ready for college or the workforce. In English and Language Arts (ELA), students focus on learning the English language including reading, writing, speaking and listening. The program is progressive with students building on their skills year by year. Writing includes both narrative and expository writing with increasing levels of complexity.

In Mathematics, students learn a finite coherent set of math topics including arithmetic, statistics, algebra, geometry and measurement. These subjects are studied in depth so that students are fully math literate in the core subjects and can apply what they have learned to more difficult higher math subjects. An emphasis is placed on learning how and when to apply certain math rules and skills rather than just rote memorization learning.

Chalk Talk: Building Big Things

At Building Big a website dedicated to the Bridges, Domes, Skyscrapers, Dams and Tunnels is a great starting place for a budding engineer or architect. Building Big is a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) TV show but the show’s website has great information on large structures, how they are built and who builds them. Kids can try their luck at building simulated structures using the interactive building challenges where kids get to choose the best tools for each type of structure. There are also interactive labs for understanding forces, materials, loads and shapes. For example with the Loads interactive lab kids can see what different types of external forces such as earthquakes, wind, vibration or soft soil could do to a structure. In addition there is a database of large structures all over the world that is searchable and kids can look for the big structures near where they live. This site is sure to get kids thinking about the fields of architecture and civil engineering.
