Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bedford District Curriculum

The Bedford social studies curriculum includes an in-depth study of American history. With the primary focus on events since the Civil War, students take part in a brief overview of seminal events in American history before 1877. This includes European colonization of the continent, the Revolutionary War era and establishment of the United States, and westward expansion of the country. Students also learn about the rapid industrialization that took place following the Civil War, and acquire an understanding of how this movement completely changed the American economy.

As part of the English language arts curriculum, Bedford students acquire literacy skills that allow them to effectively read informational texts. Children learn how to critically read documents such that they can cite specific evidence to support their analysis of that document. Students also acquire the ability to determine the meaning of unknown words or phrases by using the context in which they appear.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Extracurricular Activities

Students who participate in activities outside of the classroom stand to reap many benefits. First, involvement in extracurricular activities looks great on college applications and job applications. Both college admissions officers and potential employers want to see applicants that are well rounded and have achieved success in more than just academics. Second, participation in clubs and organizations at school or in the community foster creativity. Students can explore areas of interest not available in the classroom, opening new doors of interest and promoting innovative thinking. Lastly, involvement in activities helps children to manage their time wisely. Between the demands of schools, work, sports, clubs, or other organizations, children quickly learn to prioritize tasks and juggle various life demands.
