Beech Grove District and Curriculum

Beech Grove City Schools follow a curriculum set by the Indiana Department of Education. Students will gradually increase their knowledge in a variety of areas that become more complex as they advance in grade level. Critical thinking and problem skills are emphasized, as are abstract reasoning skills. Students are required to take courses in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Teachers, guidance counselors, and other administrators are available to help students succeed. Guidance counselors in particular can help students to identify career goals and find the classes that will most challenge them.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Beech Grove District Curriculum

In Language Arts, students learn reading comprehension strategies and how to write, and there is an emphasis on language development. During word work time, the students learn about different spelling rules and do activities to practice these rules. Language work is used to help students learn the grammatical rules of the English language. Group reading time is particularly important as it is used to group students with similar reading abilities together to work on skills and strategies. One way that teachers approach this is by engaging students in activities which will enable students to listen to letters and words and to repeat them in rhymes, songs, and poems.

Once in high school, electives in the areas of accounting, business, and information technology are also available to students. Business ethics and management are explored, along with the topic of financial responsibility. In information technology courses, students’ knowledge will increase in the areas of website development, computer programming, and graphic design.

Chalk Talk: When Should I Consider Getting A Tutor?

Parents often make the decision to get tutors for their children but students should be aware of when they need help with academics, as well. Slipping grades can be an indication that all is not well in class. If a straight-A student receives a B or lower on a few tests or assignments, it could be a sign that the student is confused or misunderstands some aspect of their schoolwork. If there is an exam coming up in an area that a student normally has trouble in, one should also consider hiring a tutor. Tutors can be also helpful for those who are not having difficulty in school and simply need help prepping. For example, studying for entrance exams for gifted or private schools or even college prep for the SAT and ACT can all be enhanced with the help of a tutor. Finally, with the help of a tutor, students can increase their knowledge and understanding of subjects that may have eluded them before, which can also boost confidence.
