Bel Aire District and Curriculum

The Kansas College and Career Ready Standards serve as the curriculum for the schools that Bel Aire students attend. They curriculum covers English Language Arts & Literacy, Math, Science, History, Government, and Social Studies, Fine Arts, and Health. Each subject has a framework that describes the skills and knowledge that students will learn each year and establishes the standards for proficiency in the subject. Students are assessed on the major objectives in the Math and English Language Arts & Literacy frameworks each year starting in third grade to ensure they are developing the critical reading and problem-solving skills they will need to use throughout their education.

We currently cover the following Bel Aire-area school districts: Wichita Unified School District 259 and Circle Unified School District 375.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bel Aire District Curriculum

The elementary Math curriculum calls for students to learn problem-solving skills in Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers and Operations in Base Ten and in Fractions, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. By the end of the fourth grade, students will be able to do all four basic math operations and have an understanding of factors and multiples. Students will learn about fraction equivalence and understand decimal notation for fractions. They will also learn how to represent and interpret data.

The middle school Math curriculum progresses on these skills and concentrates in the areas of the Number System, Expressions and Equations, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. During 8th grade, students will learn about rational and irrational numbers, and perform operations with exponents. They will also be introduced to linear equations. Eighth graders also learn how to use functions to model relationships and evaluate and compare functions. They will also solve real-world problems involving volume of cylinders and spheres.

Chalk Talk: Transcripts

There are many elements to a college application, and the one that holds the most weight is the transcript. But this doesn’t mean that the others aren’t significant. Admissions representatives values the GPA and course selection on the transcript because they demonstrate several qualities about the student. They show how rigorous the student’s course selection was, which gives insight into the student’s intellectual curiosity. Did the student choose to take the most challenging classes in her field? Of course, sometimes these classes aren’t available, and this is something the committee needs to know. How well the student does in these classes also shows the student’s work ethic and ability to overcome challenges. These are important qualities an admissions committee needs to have insight into.
