Chalk Talk: College Is Not the Only Option for Success

Many students feel as though their only pathway to future success is to go to college. While that is certainly an admirable endeavor, college isn’t for everyone. Instead, many students can benefit from getting an “alternative” education. Vocational or trade school is a very popular option right now, with many jobs available that need only one or two years of hands-on experience. Vocational schools tend to be inexpensive when compared to college, so it is a good financial choice as well. Other students can find all kinds of learning experiences available by joining the armed forces. Enlistees learn valuable skills while serving in the military that can help them find employment once their tour is up. And once military service has concluded, enlistees are eligible for the G.I. Bill should they decide to go to college. Apprenticeships are another great avenue for students to gain valuable skills. Many apprenticeships are paid, and once the apprenticeship is completed, students have master-level skills that can lead to well-paying jobs.
