Belmont District and Curriculum

The Belmont Public School District is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. The district utilizes Curriculum and Learning Benchmarks to assist students, parents, and teachers in educating the students of the district. These benchmarks guide the curriculum in each core area of study: Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. They also help to demonstrate the areas of strength and weakness in each subject for each student, allowing more targeted instruction.

We currently cover the following Belmont-area school district: Belmont Public School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belmont District Curriculum

The district has adopted the Common Core State Standards, which focus on career and college readiness for students. Students learn literacy not only in Language Arts, but also in all other content areas as well. Math standards emphasize both proficiency at procedural skills, as well as understanding. Students are also expected to be able to express their mathematic thought and to show the steps they take on quantitative reasoning tasks.

Using the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, the Belmont Public Schools have worked to go above and beyond. In addition, the district has developed various non-core subject areas, such as its foreign language curriculum taught K-12.There are many electives that take up the topic of technology and students are able to learn skills like graphic design or programming. Additionally, extracurriculars and career oriented programs are another opportunity for students to follow their own pursuits and connect their learning to their goals.

Chalk Talk: How to Get Organized

Let’s face it: getting organized can be difficult. This is especially true for students. As students face higher expectations, larger workloads, and hectic schedules, it is easy for them to become overwhelmed. However, there are a few simple steps that you and your student can follow to make life a bit more bearable. Keep a calendar. Although this seems obvious, students have a tendency to overlook this crucial step. Everything from extracurricular activities to homework assignments can be recorded, creating a central location to look for what responsibilities are coming up. Also, create a system for homework. This may mean keeping a notebook or folder for each class. Or it might involve a color coded system for different types of homework assignments. The key is to find a method that works for your student . . . and stick with it!
