Belvidere District and Curriculum

Belvidere’s schools strive to maintain a positive, student-centered environment where attendance, safety, and mutual respect are valued. The focus is on student achievement in which the educational process is considered a shared responsibility of students, families, and community in order to produce a safe learning environment that meets the creative, physical, intellectual, and emotional needs of students. The schools promote learning as a life-long process and believe education must be relevant to career choice, employment, or vocation.

We currently cover the following Belvidere-area school district: Belvidere CUSD 100.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belvidere District Curriculum

The schools’ curriculums are based on the Illinois Common Core Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, which are internationally benchmarked standards intended to provide equal, competitive educational opportunities to students regardless of location, gender, race, economic status, or learning needs. In mathematics and science classes, students thoroughly study foundational topics to ensure students have a firm understanding before moving on to more complex ideas at the high school level.

In English language arts and history classes, students read complex, nonfiction texts and write analytical essays to ensure that they develop the abilities to research materials, build arguments, and support those arguments. The goal of these classes is to ensure that students are prepared for post-secondary education and the workforce in our increasingly global environment.

Chalk Talk: College Interviews

Not every college offers interviews, but for those that do, the interview is often a very useful opportunity for students to really make a good impression to college admissions representatives. The interview can help admissions representatives get a feel for who a student really is, what s/he has to offer, and his/her personality. These interviews shouldn’t be like oral examinations, but rather conversations in which students can express their ideas, goals, and personalities. Traveling can be an issue, and many colleges offer Skype interviews. Some have alumni in a student’s area who can conduct interviews, but beware: if the alumni is trained by the admissions office, then this interview can be worthwhile, but often, the alumni are simply offering an information session, and their recommendation means little. On-campus interviews with your regional representative are the best option, whenever it is possible.
