Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Berea District Curriculum

Students in Berea are also able to engage in studies that result in the acquisition of a second language. In high school, students build off the skills they acquired in earlier grades to become fluent readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. Learners at this level are able to engage in meaningful spoken conversations with another speaker, and gain insight into the speaker’s feelings, emotions, or opinions. Students also gain the ability to convey information to others in presentational form. This could be through artistic expression, group discussion, or by presenting a written work.

The fine arts curriculum in Berea includes the option to study the visual arts. The process of learning artistic skills begins in elementary school. Students learn how art can evoke emotions or convey one’s mood. Various forms of art are discussed, such as paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Learners gain an appreciation for the cultural significance of art as well, through comparisons of art pieces from around the world. Basic artistic skills are acquired, such as the ability to draw shapes and follow directions.

Chalk Talk: The Debate About Homework

For decades homework has been part of the educational experience. Parents expect their children to have homework most school nights, yet some research indicates that homework actually has little positive impact on student achievement. Some educators argue that homework is necessary because “practice makes perfect.” Yet others argue that giving kids homework actually diminishes their desire to learn. Proponents of homework point out that it helps kids learn self-discipline and time management skills. However, detractors maintain that since homework isn’t a student’s choice, it makes them feel less independent and as though schoolwork is a chore not to be enjoyed. Whichever side of the homework debate you’re on, it’s important to support your child in their academic endeavors to ensure they have the best chance for success.
