Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bernalillo District Curriculum

The focus of Common Core is currently on the development of proficiency in Mathematics and English and Language Arts (ELA). In English students learn how to read, write, speak and listen using increasingly complex text and literature. The curriculum includes the development of skills of critical analysis and reading for information. The reading material includes both informational text of the kind a graduate may encounter and students are encouraged to use their own experiences n their essay writing.

In Mathematics, there is a cohesive curriculum including computational skills, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, probability and proportional reasoning, providing students with core knowledge in math subjects. The goal is for students to learn to apply their knowledge with an understanding of which tools to use for new math problems quickly and with confidence. Students are expected to communicate their math thought and explain how they solve problems.
