Bettendorf District and Curriculum
The Bettendorf Community School District serves almost 5,000 students within six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. By partnering with teachers, community members, and families, all students will develop the necessary skills, knowledge, uniqueness, and self-confidence to be successful in achieving their dreams. This district uses the Iowa Core standards curriculum to set the educational expectations of the students.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bettendorf District Curriculum
In English Language Arts, students will draw inferences from what they read. They will determine a theme, analyze characters, and summarize. They will compare and contrast different aspects of a story, make connections, ask questions to develop a better comprehension of what they read. As they continue to progress through school, students will continue to improve in phonics and word recognition. Reading with fluency is important to comprehension of grade level materials and is an area of focus.
In Mathematics, students will focus on problem solving, representing numbers in different ways, making connections, improving their reasoning skills, and mastery of the basic facts in the different operations (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Students will explore fractions, different units of measurements, area, perimeter and volume, graphing on a coordinate plane, and understand different attributes of two-dimensional figures.

Chalk Talk: What Is a Performance Based Assessment?
Standardized testing has been the traditional means of assessing a student’s progress. These tests included asking a series of questions (i.e., multiple choice, true or false) and checking for accuracy. An alternative to that form of testing is performance based assessments. This method uses various techniques depending on the content being assessed. The intent is to provide a better idea of the student’s depth of knowledge. Some examples of these assessments include portfolios for art projects, oral presentation, journals, written essays, and group projects.
