Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bixby District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, students are taught public speaking skills. Students learn how to write speeches on various topics, some given and some by choice, and they are of various purposes. Speeches are written and spoken to an audience for the purpose of entertaining, persuading, or giving information. Students learn how to prepare presentations, such as with PowerPoint slides, the use of a Smartboard, or with other means of technology.

In geometry, which is within the Math standards, the students will explore three-dimensional figures, such as cones, pyramids, and cubes and learn how to calculate the area of these objects. Students will be able to differentiate between two dimensional figures and the three dimensional figures. In cylinders, the students will be taught how to calculate the diameter and circumference. In two-dimensional figures, the students will be instructed on how to solve for the area of the circle in terms of pi.

Chalk Talk: What Are Leveled Readers?

Leveled readers are books that are ranked by difficulty. Teachers use leveled readers in the classroom, usually when they are teaching small-group reading instruction. Initially, the students are tested to determine their reading level using a particular testing kit and guidelines that is set forth by the school system. Once a child’s instructional level is determined, the teacher chooses books on that level or on one level above to instruct the students in reading. Throughout the school year, the students’ reading level goes up so that by the end of the year they are ready to move onto the next grade. The children are given the reading test throughout the school year to be sure they are progressing.
