Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Blanchard District Curriculum

In Mathematics, standards include explaining situations in mathematics using relationships and their patterns. Extending patterns by way of connecting thinking patterns is one concept the elementary child learns to do. Using a variety of manipulatives, the students finish and create patterns using their knowledge of number sense and relationships of objects. The students also make predictions about math ideas and draw conclusions using their knowledge of concepts.

In English Language Arts, the learners write for multiple audiences and purposes. Informing, entertaining, describing, reflecting, and persuading are all ways the children learn to write and develop their writing skills as they learn the writing process. Stories are always fun for the students to write, and they write fiction stories with characters that they develop, about places, experiences, and about many ideas. When writing, the students learn to come up with a main idea, and practice using the writing process – from brainstorming to final draft.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Primary Music Teacher

The Primary Music Teacher plays a huge role in the development of the children’s musical talents. Starting in the primary grades, the students are exposed to a wide variety of music and develop an appreciation for different types. The students sing, use instruments, learn how to keep a beat, practice solos and duets, and do musical activities, such as plays to keep them actively involved in music. Music is very good for brain development, and as research shows, students who participate in the music and arts have a great chance at success in school. The primary music teacher helps the students with the music curriculum, and prepares them for learning more music, such as chorus and band, later on in elementary and middle school. This teacher keeps music fun and exciting for the little ones as they develop their talents!
