Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bloomfield District Curriculum

Common Core provides curriculum standards for all grade levels particularly in the area of Mathematics and English and Language Arts. The focus of Common Core is on providing students with the skills they will need to be successful in college or other advanced educational opportunities and in the workforce. In English and Language Arts (ELA) students learn to read, write, speak and listen using correct English. The same ELA standards are also applied to coursework in other core classes including Social Studies, Science and Technology courses. Students read both informational texts such as they might find in the workplace and literature for reading material.

In Mathematics, students are focused in on basic mathematical subjects such as computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability and measurement. Students are expected to be mathematically literate by the end of high school and should be able to apply their math skills in the workforce and in higher math.

Keeping Informed: Recent Bloomfield Educational News

  • Destination Imagination - Members of the Mesa Alta Junior High School Punk Rock Nerds Destination Imagination recently placed first in the New Mexico State Destination Imagination competition and went on to compete at the national level. Destination Imagination is a nonprofit group that is committed to providing students with challenges provided in the form of competitions that help build student skills in the area of teamwork, imagination, critical thinking and creativity. Team challenges include solving problems in the area of technical, scientific, fine arts, improvisational, structural, service learning and early learning.
  • Grant for Early Childhood Education - The Bloomfield Early Childhood Center recently received a grant that allows 160 four year old children to receive free attendance at the center. The Center provides early childhood education for preschoolers. Children who qualified and met the current age restrictions and were able to take advantage of the preschool experience for either morning or afternoon classes.
  • Golden Apple Award - Seven elementary school teachers in New Mexico recently won the Golden Apple Award given out to those teachers who demonstrated Excellence in Teaching. James Olivas, who teaches sixth grade at the Naaba Ani Elementary School in the Bloomfield School District, was chosen as one of the seven award winners. More than 140 teachers from New Mexico schools were nominated for the award by principals, parents, other teachers and community members.

The Franklin Institute makes learning about Benjamin Franklin fun for kids on their Resources for Learning section of the organization’s website. The namesake for the Institute, the site provides an easy to read history of Franklin’s life and works, information on upcoming birthday celebrations for Franklin at the Institute, and answers to all kinds of frequently asked questions about Benjamin Franklin. In addition there is a quicktime movie about Franklin called Benjamin Franklin: Glimpses of the Man which provides an insightful and easy to understand look at Franklin’s life. There are also activities for kids and information on Franklin’s Glass Armonica and a look at how Franklin changed the country’s monetary system.
