Tazewell County Public Schools help students succeed in education by building relationships with them as they are educating. Their educational curriculum is based on the state of Virginia’s Standards of Learning; this provides both the learning objectives that students are expected to master each year and the benchmarks by which their proficiency is assessed.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bluefield District Curriculum

Reading begins with students learning how to identify letters and their sounds. They then learn how these letters join together and make words. Within years, students learn about different genres, author’s viewpoint, settings, and more. By the time they graduate, the students at Tazewell County Public Schools are able to read a book and share what is being said from the author’s viewpoint and from their own, and then compare the two.

Tazewell County Public Schools help students learn about their world through their social studies curriculum. Students learn about the people in their community that help it to run efficiently. They then learn about the people that settled their land. These students also learn about the cultures of different lands and why these countries were formed by these people. Through these classes, students are able to learn how each one of them can make a difference in the world to day.

Chalk Talk: Junior High Writing

By the time students reach seventh and eighth grade, they have learned the basics of writing, but there are still topics they have to learn to help them reach proficiency. During these years, students learn how to write to make a point. Usually they will be asked to support a specific point and then evidence is to be shown to prove this point. These students also learn how to research a topic, using a variety of media and internet sources. This entails them looking up the topic, creating an outline and then writing it up. Another aspect that these students learn is to expand their foundation of grammar, vocabulary and spelling.
