Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bolivar District Curriculum

The public schools in the Hardeman County School System follow the Common Core State Standards curriculum. For instance, with mathematics in the lower grades, students are to study and understand number cardinality, basic numerical analysis, and mathematical thinking. It is not enough for students to simply find an answer, but rather they understand and can work with these concepts.

In language arts, social sciences, science, and other subject’s students focus on reading and writing, listening and speaking, and a mastery over the English language. With these topics students work their way up through the course material. They begin with simple skills, and work their way up using all of their skills as they go. The idea behind this type of curriculum is to have students using all of these skills in all courses. For instance, a student in math class might write a report on a prominent mathematician. This gives the student a historical foundation in mathematics, as well as developing their budding literacy skills.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Secondary Education

One of the most important indicators of success in college is success in secondary education. This definitely does not mean straight A’s, but it is important to develop a solid work ethic in the teenage years. College can be a difficult transition for a great majority of students. However, this transition can be less daunting for those students prepared for the challenge. Success in academics begins with a well-rounded and solid foundation. In order for a student to succeed in Calculus, they must first master Algebra. This also requires exceptional study habits, and the ability to look at problems from a different perspective. Even though college may seem like one of the most terrifying transitions in a young person’s life, it can be one of the most rewarding if you have all the groundwork laid. Also, students will find that college is a great jumping off point for all of their other life pursuits.
