Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brainerd District Curriculum

The elementary level math curriculum in Brainerd seeks to help students develop a strong foundation of mathematical skills. Students develop an understanding of basic math procedures, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Learners also acquire the ability to estimate sums and differences of up to 100. Learners work with whole numbers, including those with up to two digits, and learn how to add and subtract them with proficiency. Number patterns are learned as well. Students learn how to create number sequences that skip an equal number, such as 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Brainerd’s arts curriculum introduces learners to concepts related to theatre and theatre production. Students engage in devising scripts for plays. This includes developing characters, settings, and stage designs to make the production a cohesive whole. Students take part in critiques of one another’s work in order to build the capacity to take constructive criticism and use it to make a script better. Learners also work on their stage presence, including voice tone and projection, eye contact, posture, and movement around the stage.

Chalk Talk: Environmental Education Benefits Students

Environmental education courses offer students much more than increased insight into the physical world in which they live. These courses involve hands-on and experiential learning that gets kids actively engaged in the learning process. Experiments in labs and data collect in the field promote the development of strong science and math skills. Additionally, environmental education promotes awareness of critical issues that humanity is facing with the environment. Students learn about sources of energy, including renewable and non-renewable energies, and explain how each is beneficial and detrimental to the environment. It can help students become stewards of the environment and increase their conscientiousness about environmental issues. With this improved understanding, students can make more informed decisions about how they interact with the environment.
