Chalk Talk: Tips for Choosing the Right College

Making the choice between colleges can be a difficult task for your child. However, there are certain criteria you can help them examine in order to make the best decision. First, help your child identify the pros and cons of each school on their short list. This list should include a wide range of factors, from the quality of academic programs to the quality of on-campus housing. Identifying the factors most critical to them will help them narrow their list even further. Second, sit down with your child to examine the financial aid packages offered by each school. With the high costs of getting a college education, affordability should be a big part of the equation. Lastly, don’t be afraid to contact professors or other university personnel to ask questions and seek clarification. Encourage your child to make these connections so they can make a more informed decision.
