Chalk Talk: Benefits of Music in Education

Studies have shown that students who engage in music classes see benefits in many aspects of their intellectual development. Studying music is correlated with improved analytical thinking – a skill that is important for all subjects, but especially for math and science courses. SAT scores of students who participate in music courses are significantly higher on math and verbal tests than students who are not actively engaged in the study of music. And the benefits don’t stop there. Music students tend to be more organized, are able to think quickly, have improved fine motor skills and have improved abstract reasoning skills. In short, the study of music, music performance or music appreciation opens the door for improved academic performance in a wide variety of areas.
