Brigham City District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Box Elder School District, like all school districts in Utah, is in the process of implementing the Utah Core Standards in all subjects. These standards are the local version of Common Core State Standards, which are an evidence-based program of high and concrete standards which will produce college-and-career-ready high school graduates. The Core Standards are designed to make sure that students build knowledge in all areas throughout their education.

We currently cover the following Brigham City-area school district: Box Elder School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brigham City District Curriculum

Students learn basic skills in literacy and numeracy in elementary school, but these are taught with an eye towards strategies that will support higher achievement in the upper grades. For instance, students are taught how to read texts that are difficult and find information to help them understand them, which will help them when they read more difficult texts in high school and college. Math is taught with an emphasis on the similarities and continuities between fields, so that students will be able to apply early skills to harder contexts.

The district has begun using a system of content-based grading to help students achieve these academic goals. Rather than being evaluated through the earning of points, students are evaluated on to what extent they have mastered the standards for the given subject being evaluated. Student work habits are graded separately from their mastery of content, which means that teachers will be better able to assure that students are able to do the tasks that they are expected to do.

  • State Superintendent Stays Involved - The former State Superintendent of Schools, the head of all schools for Utah, remains active in the educational field: he’s a volunteer at a Brigham City elementary school. He, like many retired people from the community, participates in a project where he reads to students and works with them on their literacy skills. The program received support from a local grocery store chain and television station.
  • New High Schools - A new high school is being built in Brigham City to upgrade the school’s resources. The old buildings needed a lot of repairs, but the new ones will have resources that students and teachers have been asking for, and were designed in collaboration with student and teacher input. The goal was to build schools that will meet the community’s needs for the next seventy years.

Chalk Talk: Why Writing Matters

We do more and more of our communication in written form these days. Students who complain about the amount of writing they have to do for school need to be reminded of how much writing they also do in their daily lives—and how much more they will do when they get into the workplace! Writing is an essential skill for careers in business, the sciences, law, and communications, as well as nearly all other careers. In addition, writing for self-expression is a very rewarding practice, whether it’s writing in a personal journal, keeping a blog, or writing fiction or poetry to express your feelings and insights. Written assignments may be tough, but dedication to writing will pay off in the long term.
