Bristol School District has adopted the National Common Core Standards, and has a jump on applying them with pacing guides lined out for each subject area and grade band. Their pacing guides help teachers ensure that they are teaching each standard to the depth and quality that is integral to the Common Core initiatives. STEM resources and PARCC assessment reference sheets also provide excellent support for parents and teachers in making sure that students are prepared for state assessments and for higher-order thinking.

Keeping Informed: Recent Bristol Educational News
- Local Schools Named as Tennessee Reward Schools - Two elementary schools and a high school in Bristol School District, along with four other schools in the area were recognized as reward schools by the Tennessee State Department of Education. The schools received this recognition for their progress in student academic achievement from year to year. These schools have been improving student achievement for the last several years, and after another excellent year, they’re being recognized and rewarded for their efforts.
- New Outdoor Solar Classroom - Holston Elementary School broke ground on an outdoor pavilion which will serve as an outdoor learning space and as an energy producer. The area will be shaded by the solar panel, which will be producing 50,000 watts of power. Picnic tables, concrete flooring, and it will serve as a model for other schools in the area to use solar electric energy. Students in the area will be able to earn college credits in solar technology at a local college by using this facility. This is an excellent opportunity for young people to become more aware of real ways they can make a difference in the footprint their generation leaves on the Earth.
- Three Local Teachers Honored as Ambassadors - Three local teachers have been selected to the Reward Schools Ambassador Program, to share best practices and help improve student achievement. These teachers were nominated by their schools, based on their performance and their evaluations. These fifteen leading teachers in the state will be able to collaborate with each other and with many teachers in the state, integrating best practices in all schools and classrooms. Their support in a cooperative effort with many educators, will improve their leadership skills while improving student performance and achievement statewide.

Chalk Talk: Helping Develop Literacy Skills
If your child is like most kids in America, he or she has reading to do for homework every night. If it’s not for a certain subject, like social studies or science, then it might just be 20 minutes of reading every night. One of the best things children can do to improve their reading skills and strategies, is to talk about what they’re reading. They should ask questions, wonder about possibilities, and clarify what was meant by specific vocabulary or dialogue. Nothing gets you to understand a book better than talking about it. To make this work into a discussion, it means you and your children must have all read or heard the text. Encourage your children to write notes or questions on small sticky notes to mark areas for focused conversation later. By doing this, they are learning the value of understanding everything they can from what they read.
