Chalk Talk: Educational Software

There are several different types of educational software. Drill and practice software is applicable in every subject area. These are programs that require students to practice concepts that they have already been taught. This type of software lends itself to subjects that require memorization; it generally addresses the bottom level of Bloom’s taxonomy. Tutorial software is generally in the form of a written explanation for private study. This software model moves beyond the attainment of basic skills, it presents a problem or example and gives students a step by step process to follow. This is an effective way to introduce concepts to students. Multimedia can be defined as any combination of media that is synthesized, while hypermedia is more interactive; participants can pick and choose the order of tasks. These types of media increase the effectiveness of the delivery of information and add motivation and engagement to a lesson.
