Chalk Talk: Nashville Symphony Orchestra

A great way to get young kids interested in music is to introduce them to the Nashville Symphony Orchestra website SFKIDS.org. The website provides educational games where kids can discover music, listen to all kinds of music, play and compose music, and try their hand at conducting. With Symphony Hall kids get handed the baton and have the opportunity to see what it is like to keep an orchestra performing learning simple rhythms and what each hand does to keep the orchestra in harmony. Once students have gone through trying out right hand beat patterns and left hand volume gestures, they can try out conducting Stravinsky's Lullaby from Firebird, Ravel's Bolero, or Debussy's Festivals. If the conducting is in error, the online orchestra stops playing. In another educational game, students can learn the basics of composing in Music Mountain. In this game kids learn about musical notation, notes, tempos, musical signatures and orchestral sounds.
