Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Buena Vista District Curriculum

Mathematics becomes a part of every student’s education beginning with learning how to count so that each object in a set is assigned a number. This expands as children learn how to combine numbers to come up with solutions. The students then are able to learn how to sort objects, name geometric figures and interpret data. These skills enable students to face high school geometry, algebra, statistics and calculus and succeed.

Nature is a large part of every student’s science education at Buena Vista City Schools. Students begin by observing changes that occur every season as well as the basic parts of plants and animals. They then begin to explore each of these things more in-depth as they learn about the systems that help plants and animals survive. In middle school and high school they break these down more as they discover DNA and RNA and how each of these make each item in nature unique.

Chalk Talk: Educator Tips to Try at Home

There are times when parents would like ideas to help their children learn. Here are some ideas to try. Teachers use motivational charts to help students set goals. As the students reach these goals there are pre-set rewards that they can receive. Teachers also use praise to help build self-confidence. This does not mean to gush for each thing they do correct, but when a parent catches a child doing something correctly, praise them and see the smile that is received in return. Expect a child to do well and they will strive to meet this expectation. When a child is shown how to do an activity, they will then try to do just the same. Teachers use this everyday when they show how to diagram a sentence or solve a math equation, then they assign homework so they can see if the child understands. By implementing some of these ideas, children and parents can both grow.
