Burrillville District and Curriculum

The Burrillville School Department follows the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) which were adopted in 2010 to provide a consistent body of standards that schools could adhere to in order to ensure that all students receive instruction in the skills necessary to succeed in occupations and higher education after graduation.

We currently cover the following Burrillville-area school district: Burrillville School Department.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burrillville District Curriculum

The Burrillville School Department follows the Common Core for English Language Arts and Mathematics. The other courses are governed by curricula that reflect the same high expectations as the CCSS. The science courses enumerate the key skills and concepts that must be mastered by grade level and unit of study. In grade one, for example, students study a unit featuring earth and space science. The key concepts are broken down into key skills, such as using scientific tools to monitor and record weather patterns.

Education in the realm of technology is introduced as early as kindergarten to build in students a foundation of ability and familiarity with current technology. The high school students follow the 21st Century Skills curriculum. In the first and second quarters, the focus is on digital organizational tools. Students build an ILP, or an individualized learning plan, and display their work in a digital portfolio.

Chalk Talk: Personalize Your Gear

Writing your name on your backpack, notebooks, and other items is a simple and easy way to help to identify your possessions in the sea of similar-looking objects at school. Some businesses specialize in personalized items; you can order pens and pencils printed with your name online and receive them in the mail. However, you can make your possessions even more special with a little effort. Using fabric paints, you can write your name in neon colors or draw a design on your backpack. You can also iron on patches on your backpack; they come in many shapes and designs. You can decorate the front of your notebooks or pencil case with stickers or use colored markers to paint a mural. What cool ideas do you have so your school supplies can stand out in a crowd?
