Caledon District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum used to teach students from Calendon was developed by the Ministry of Education to provide a comprehensive overview of what students need to learn in their core subjects and in the elective style programs offered. The curriculum is designed in collaboration between professionals and educators so that it provides both a strong base and teaches skills that employers see as necessary in post-secondary life. Arts programs, health and physical education, careers-based learning, and elective courses, as well as athletics, clubs, and before and after-school programming, offer students many valuable opportunities to reach their highest possible potential.

We currently cover the following Caledon-area school districts: Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Peel District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Caledon District Curriculum

Each subject has a framework that details the year-by-year expectations for student learning. These are framed around the broader goals for subject area learning. For instance, in Math, the goal is that students develop a wealth of abstract and logical reasoning skills which are developed through a strong base of knowledge in numerical operations, geometric functions, and ways of analyzing data. In Science, the ability to generate theories and use scientific processes to determine the validity of a theory is an important goal.

Literacy goals are integrated into all areas of the curriculum. Students are expected to be able to read for meaning in science, math via word problems and other information, history, and of course, literature. Writing is a significant portion of the English curriculum as well as a feature of other subjects, and students are required to have the skills to develop clear, logical writing.

Chalk Talk: Budgeting and Teens

Children are surrounded with things that they would like to buy frequently, and they usually turn to their parents to purchase it for them. There are ways that parents can help the children learn to budget for their own items. First, allowances can be helpful for teaching children about money. This can be given by age, chore or a weekly amount. Next, help the teen set up a saving account. This can introduce them to deposit slips, savings and accumulating money. A teen can also learn about earning money by parents paying them for extra jobs such as babysitting. Finally, parent and child can sit down together as the parent works on the family budget and while they then take them on errands to show the importance of money management. By teaching the teens this now parents allow them to become more independent when they go to college.
