Canandaigua District and Curriculum

The Canandaigua City School District has two main goals for the students it serves including helping students achieve academic success and become good citizens of good character. The curriculum is academically challenging and is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that that it meets the established standards. the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Staff are dedicated to unified and preparatory instruction in all core academic subjects. The most recent changes focus on English language arts and mathematics. Literacy in all subjects and competency with numbers are paramount to CCSD objectives. The curriculum gives students the opportunity to delve into various careers in order to identify the various pathways to becoming a small business owner. Students are also given insight into how to gain experience in the career area of their choice.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Canandaigua District Curriculum

The curriculum in all the public schools in the Canandaigua City School District is mapped to the Common Core Curriculum approved by the New York State Board of Regents. In addition to academics, the district is committed to providing an education that includes technology use in terms of both student access and classroom instruction. The English and Language Arts program is focused on helping students learn to read, write, speak and listen in fluent English. At the youngest grades students are introduced to both informational text and literature in an effort to provide students with the type of literacy that will benefit them in advanced education and in their careers.

In Mathematics, students learn the basics of computation including basic arithmetic, geometry, algebra, statistics and probability. There is a measurement and data strand in the elementary curriculum. Students learn how to represent and interpret data, and explore geometric measurements such as surface area. The Math curriculum is progressive and intensive, providing students with the skills they need to be mathematically literate.

  • Canandaigua Community Supports Capital Projects through Vote - The Canandaigua voters have passed a capital enhancement project for $13.38 million. The district will use the funds for many security improvements, as well as athletic and physical education facilities..

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute which is a philanthropic organization to further biomedical research and science education offers a website for kids called Cool Science for Cool Kids. The website is geared toward encouraging kid’s interest in biology and the sciences in general through games and informational sections including an online microscopic experience, and information on snakes, lizards, monkeys, butterflies, and caterpillars. Another popular science resource is the NASA for Students website. For young children, they have a Kids Club with games and age-appropriate educational material. For older students, there is history about the different missions NASA has been on, live-streaming NASA TV, photo galleries, and resources for students interested in further study of the subject. For children of all ages, and their families, they also list events being held around the country. The site also provides information about different educational programs and camps that are available to students.
