Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cañon City District Curriculum

The Language Arts program introduces elementary students to all elements of the curriculum they will be expected to master: reading, writing, speaking and listening. In middle school, students also add in research skills and also use media as a source of reflection and comparison. High school students are exposed to all forms of literature and writing, and are expected to apply critical thinking skills to questions and essays. The program is designed to effectively prepare students for college and career life.

The math program follows a similar approach and begins by introducing students to number systems, operations, algebraic patterning, measurement, and shape awareness. In middle school, students in the Cañon City Schools are introduced to ratios, statistics, and probability. This coherent approach helps students develop a core mastery of math skills which can then be applied to higher math and in real world situations.

Chalk Talk: Helping Kids Develop Organizational Skills

Some kids are natural organizers, others need to be taught. When children are young, they all benefit from having routines and schedules that they can depend on. Later, when homework and other routines are preparing students fort the routines of high school and college, it may need some reinforcing. The “routine” may take some time but a friendly reminder, like a snack waiting for your child or a spot cleared at the table, can encourage your child’s organization. Starting with the beginning of the school year, at any grade level, your student can be organized for homework, studying and the school day, a skill that can continue in other areas of their life as well. Helping to develop the organizational sense in a child will pay off in all the things they do academically.
