Canyon Lake District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Canyon Lake Schools use the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills as the foundation of their curriculum, then they add resources from their staff and the community to prepare the students for their lives after high school. Before they graduate, students also explore the different lifestyles of people throughout the world. They learn how different cultures eat, the food they consume and the houses they live in. This is done by allowing parents from different cultures to talk with the classes and introduce some items and food that they have from their background.

We currently cover the following Canyon Lake-area school district: Comal Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Canyon Lake District Curriculum

Canyon Lake schools integrates their reading and writing curriculum throughout each student’s education. The students begin reader/writer workshops in elementary and continue through high school. During these workshops, the students learn to use models in each subject to assist in the other. The teacher helps to guide the reading and writing. Through these workshops, students learn how to compare and contrast linear and non-linear plot development and how to analyze authors’ development through complex but believable characters.

World geography, at Canyon Lake schools, is implemented through a variety of activities to help students relate to the subject matter. The schools help students and parents observe World Geography Day through the World Geography Awareness Project. Students are made aware of resources in an area by looking for some of these items in the school yard. Other grades go on geocache adventures where they go on field trips to find a GPS device that is placed in a park.

Chalk Talk: Fifth-Grade Science

Educational standards may differ from state to state but generally when a student is in fifth-grade they learn the same things in science. In this grade, students begin measuring, predicting and recording. They may use these in experiments, or be shown in a demonstration. A lot of hands-on learning activities are incorporated to keep students interests and many opportunities to correlate the learning with the chance to explore natural, outdoor phenomenon. When conducting experiments, students need to keep in mind science safety and they need to try to predict what the outcome of the experiment will be. This is an important year in the development of scientific literacy as well; students are beginning to take a more active role in individual learning opportunities and need to be able to communicate their scientific thinking. It is important that parents stay in contact with the teacher so they know how they can assist their child toward a successful year in science exploration.
