Carbondale District and Curriculum
Carbondale’s public schools are part of the Roaring Fork School District. The primary mission of the district is to prepare all students for entrance into college or the workforce. This mission is achieved through a cooperative effort between teachers, staff members, and parents to create an educational environment that is challenging, caring, and forward thinking. In addition to an academic focus, the district provides many opportunities for children to develop on a social level.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carbondale District Curriculum
A significant part of the Roaring Fork School District’s curriculum is English Language Learning coursework. The district’s curriculum is based on Colorado’s English Language Proficiency Standards, which outline methods for English language learners to develop the ability to communicate at school for academic purposes, as well as social purposes. The standards are divided into six distinct areas to increase its focus.
The science curriculum in Carbondale is rooted in the practice of gaining real-world knowledge through experiential learning. Students are given opportunities to learn about the life sciences, earth and space science, chemistry, and the like. Each course includes authentic learning experiences that connect learning in very authentic ways to problem solving, innovation, and analysis. Using these skills, students acquire a better understanding of the world in which they live, from the behavior of molecules to the interplay of genetics and the environment.

Keeping Informed: Recent Carbondale Educational News
- Graduation Requirements Receive Update - The Roaring Fork School District’s class of 2018 will be the first to graduate under recently expanded graduation requirements. The new criteria for graduation include more classroom time for students in core subject areas.
- Parent Mentors Get Involved in the Classroom - Many classrooms in the Roaring Fork School District now have parent mentors. Mentors volunteer their time to assist teachers with a variety of tasks, including English language learning or translation services for the district’s large Hispanic population.
- Roaring Fork Focuses on Technology - Students in the Roaring Fork School District will all soon have one-to-one access to computers. The technology initiative aims to help children take advantage of the many benefits that technology offers for the purposes of learning.

Fortunately there are other options for young people to improve themselves after graduation and gain the skills they need to support themselves and a family. Trade school is an excellent option considering that many high-demand careers are in hands-on fields such as technology and energy exploration. These jobs pay well and many require a certification that can be obtained in two years or less. For those interested in on-the-job training and the possibility of a long-term career, joining the armed forces is a good choice. The advantage of serving in the military is that individuals gain valuable skills that can translate into civilian employment upon discharge from the service. Veterans are also eligible for the G.I. Bill, in case college becomes a desire later on.
