Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carolina Beach District Curriculum

At the elementary level, the district pays special attention to numbers and their place values in Math and sounds and word building in English. These basic concepts are well worked upon to enhance the child’s learning abilities of new concepts introduced at middle and higher levels of schooling. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of most topics, and so in Math, have an awareness of algebraic patterns, measurement and geometry, and proportions and data analysis.

For upper levels, the district goal is to enhance the cognitive abilities of the child and do this by making children solve mathematical problems dealing with different strategies for reaching solutions. In this way, the child gets to use his mind to think over the situation and how to deal with it. Similarly for English there are brainstorming sessions where children give their own ideas about a certain topic and either discuss it with their friends and teachers or develop a full length essay on the topic.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of a Bedtime Reading Habit

The importance of reading at bedtime to your kids is surely undeniable. At night time, when you put them to sleep, they love to be pampered and taken care of and when they hear one of their parents voice, telling them a story, they just love it; they get a sense of belonging. As a child’s memory is sharp, they retain in their minds whatever they had heard and remember it for a long time. They also get to understand the importance of reading and start taking interest in books at a very young age. They also grow up learning to love books and stories and the possibilities they can see through them. Having children’s magazines, non-fiction aimed at a young age group, and their favorite stories all at hand also gives them the chance to make choices about what they read. Children may get to learn new words and improve upon their vocabulary and conversation skills in this way.
