Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Castle Pines District Curriculum

The Douglas County Schools devises student learning opportunities using the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum methodology, which outlines the skills and knowledge students should acquire at each grade level from preschool to high school. In preschool physical education, this means that children engage in recreational activities that teach collaboration, effective communication skills, and problem-solving skills. Health-related lessons deal with making healthy personal decisions, developing a strong sense of self, and promoting positive relationships with others.

For high school students, the science curriculum includes highly rigorous classes including Advanced Placement biology, chemistry, and physics. Each of these courses includes rigorous study of scientific processes that require evaluation, analysis, and other higher-ordered thinking skills. Students create models to solve problems, collect data to hypothesize the outcome of experiments, and engage in the process of inquiry.

Chalk Talk: Developing Comprehensive Literacy Skills

Students read textbooks in content areas such as social studies and science, but as there is limited time for these subjects and small-group reading is typically impractical. In these subjects, teachers will likely have to call on students to read orally in a whole-class setting. They should aim to choose volunteers to read, but if they find that the same few students are reading over and over again and want to call on different students whose hands aren’t raised, they should only call on them if they are sure they can comfortably read the material. Such textbooks can be challenging and contain too much content-specific vocabulary for students to understand, so sometimes, teachers may be better off reading these sections or chapters aloud to the class (the Common Core Standards are working to give students the skills to be able to read and understand texts in different content areas). On that note, it is always a good idea for teachers to read aloud before sending students off in their groups so as to model good reading habits.
